About WPR. The Why.

We write to survive and thrive better. Poetry is a tool for wellness.

The youth suicide rate rose over 55% from 2007 to 2017. Many adult poets know someone who has attempted to or ended their own life.

A study of women writers found that they had high rates of depression at 56%.

A study of MFA creative writing students found that 80% of writers suffered from mood disorders including depression.

It also found that while 4% of non-writers abused alcohol, 30% of writers abused alcohol.

Poets are stereotyped as alcohol, smoking, and drug-dependent—marketable images of miserable genius. Break free.

It is a radical act to wish to be well in this world and to seek it.

Sincerely,

Emily Spencer, MFA
